Dunbar
lies approx. 12 Miles East of Haddington on the fringe of the North Sea.
This Royal Burgh, laying claim to be the "Sunniest Town in Scotland" with it’s easy access from Edinburgh and The South make it a popular Holiday Resort. The birthplace of John Muir this town offers much in the way of interest to the Tourist. The Tollbooth in the High Street dates from 1650 while the remains of the Castle, once the home of the Earls of Dunbar and famously defended by "Black Agnes " Countess of Dunbar, at the entrance to the Harbour dates from the 13 Th. Century. Boats operating from the busy Working Harbour offer Fishing Trips, Diving Trips and Pleasure Cruises. The local Golf Course is popular with Residents and Tourists alike. Two Miles West of the town lies John Muir Country Park is a popular picnic area and along with its wide expanse of seashore offers scope for Recreation, Bird watching and Bathing. This is also a good starting off point for a Walk along the beach to Tyninghame Bay. Public Transport to and from Haddington and North Berwick is available on a regular basis. What
to see and do in Dunbar. Dunbar Castle, now a ruin, once boldly defended by Black Agnes before the castle was forfeit to James 1. has also played host to such dignataries as Mary, Queen of Scots, Darnley and Boswell. Dunbar, being the birthplace of John Muir, the instigator of National Parks in America, has John Muir House Museum devoted to this great man`s Life. The Tollboth, on the High Street dates from 1660 while Lauderdale House at the end of the High Street dates from 1740. To the West of the town lies John Muir Country Park, which with it’s recreational and leisure areas, is a must for families looking for a day out or for a laze or picnic on the beach. The Park is also a good starting point for walks along the coast either to Belhaven Bay to the East or Tyninghame Bay to the West or for just a ramble along the beach. The local Golf Course offers a challenging links course for the golfer and the local Tennis Courts are available either for practice or for the more serious player. Dunbar Lifeboat Day is an occasion not to be missed, a great day out for all the family. |
